Most people enjoy the chance to stay in bed and relax, especially when they typically get up early. For some, sleeping in is an everyday thing. What you might fail to realize is that getting up early is a proven way to boost your motivation and productivity during the day.

The reason many people have such a hard time becoming a morning person is because they try to suddenly start getting up hours earlier. This is such a shock to your system that it’s never going to last. Instead, try setting your alarm just one minute earlier each day. This will slowly help your body adjust to getting up earlier and one minute doesn’t seem as hard as an hour or two.

The trick here is to avoid hitting the snooze button a bunch of times. By setting your alarm one minute earlier every day, you gradually train your body to become an early riser.

Hitting your snooze button a bunch of times is counterproductive and will only keep you in the cycle you’re already in. Work on getting up right away and you’ll quickly grow to love how much more productive you are with all that extra time you have to get things done.

You might also find that going to bed a bit earlier at night will help make it easier to get up in the morning. Try to move your bedtime back about 15 minutes each week. The experts recommend getting 7 to 9 hours each night, so aim for that when you adjust your bedtime and wake up time.

  1. Create a Morning Routine

Your morning routine might not be the same as someone else’s, but it’s got to be something that works for you. The right routine will help you get the most out of your morning and get as much done as you’d like to. Not only that, but a good morning routine will help you focus so you can cross everything off your to do list that you want and need to get done.

Starting your morning the right way sets the pace for the rest of the day and helps anchor you and set you up for productivity.

While the right routine for you might need some tweaking, there are some common elements that experts say you must include. Start by having a glass of water to wake you up and re-hydrate your body and brain.

Have some coffee or tea for a dose of caffeine and connect with your loved ones, whether that be your spouse, kids or pets. You might also want to meditate for a few minutes, read, or take a relaxing shower. Then you can tackle the to do list and plan the rest of your day.

Write down your routine so that you can follow along with the order of things until they become something you just do without having to think about it. You might also have to make adjustments as you find the perfect morning routine that works for you.

  1. Do the Most Important Task First

Getting out of bed in the morning can be hard enough, but facing a huge task sometime during the day can make it even harder.

Brian Tracy, author of “Eat the Frog,” suggests doing the biggest or hardest thing first. He calls this “eating the frog.” If you’ve already eaten the frog, then you know that the rest of the day is going to be better because you’ve gotten the most unpleasant thing out of the way first off.

Make a point of doing your most dreaded task first so that it’s out of the way and the rest of the day seems easier in comparison. This helps reduce the risk of procrastination and ensures that you don’t spend the entire day dreading that one thing you’ve got to get done. This will be different for everyone. Perhaps it’s your workout, or paying the bills, or making that long overdue doctor’s appointment. Whatever it is, you’ll find that you’re much more motivated and productive for the rest of the day.

Before you go to bed at night, figure out which chore for the next day you’re dreading the most. Then work out your schedule so that you can get it out of the way as soon as possible. Having a plan in place will make it easier to fall asleep and will help you rest easier since you know what you’re facing.
