Keeping my kinky-coils moisturized and tangle-free was one of the toughest codes I learned to crack on my natural hair journey.
No matter what the season – summer, winter, spring or fall – my hair always seemed to default to dry and brittle. In order to prevent breakage and to maximize growth I created a D-I-Y peppermint leave-in conditioner and detangling spray. It’s perfect for any wash-and-go or protective style, this light-weight elixir will leave your curls supple and shiny.
D-I-Y Peppermint Leave-In Conditioner & Detangling Spray
By: Toni “elleax” Zargari
- (1) 16oz Spray Bottle
- ½ cup of distilled water
- ½ cup of rosewater
- 10 drops of peppermint oil
- 1 tsp. of 100% virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp. of 100% organic unrefined virgin coconut oil (melted)
- ¼ cup of your favorite leave-in conditioner
First thing’s first. In a medium-size mixing bowl, add coconut, olive, and peppermint oil to your favorite leave-in conditioner. Stir until oils are uniform and smooth. Remove the spray bottle top and set aside.
Using a funnel, pour the oils into the spray bottle. Add rosewater and distilled water. If you prefer the subtle scent of rose more than an exhilarating peppermint fragrance, feel free to add 20 drops of pure rose oil to one cup of distilled water instead of rosewater. Replace the spray bottle top and tightly close. Shake vigorously.
Water and oil are essential when detangling a curly-do. Good thing this D.I.Y. peppermint conditioning spray is plump with both. As you saturate your hair with the mixture, the natural lubricant of olive and coconut oil will help loosen any knots, making detangling an easier task. Remember to use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and work out tangles from ends to root. Curls can be left out to dry naturally or styled for protection.
Daily Moisturizing For Natural Hair
For hair that tends to become drier throughout the day, use the conditioning spray once in the morning, again at midday, and lastly at night. Doing so will help add shine and moisture needed for a healthy set of curls.
Scalp Massaging For Natural Hair
If growing your hair is a priority, this spray can be used at night during a routine scalp massage. The tingling sensation of peppermint oil stimulates the scalp, causing blood to circulate, prompting your follicles to sprout.
