Touch up your curls in D.C at Love StudioKL

Love StudioKL is an intimate studio in the heart of D.C at L’Enfant Plaza with the motto “Only healthy hair can give beautiful results”

The salon specializes in natural hair and offers natural-fan-favorites like two strand twists, Flexi-rod sets, and blow outs. The name, Studio KL, stands for the initials of current owners Kimistry (Kimberly) and Lady T and the love for hair they have.  Kimistry keeps the atmosphere fun by offering orange juice, mimosas, and playing music to keep the experience upbeat.  It’s easy to forget about hectic D.C living inside the studio and that’s what they strive for. It’s a quaint oasis and environment that invites meaningful conversation.

IMG_2356Decorating the salon interior was a DIY project for Kimistry and Lady T. From painting the walls to designing the door mirrors they use for styling, they did it on their own. The salon had it’s grand opening in July 2016.

“We are a fun, creative based salon that encourages color and fun cuts ranging from wild and free to conservative” – Kimistry

Kimistry realized her passion for styling and turned it into a career. She previously worked at an Aveda salon and developed a love for natural products and styling techniques. They support local business by using Barry Fletcher products during the styling process to keep natural hair moisturized throughout. Instead of harsh gels, Kimistry finishes the style with forming pomade by Paul Mitchell. She looks for products that provide great hold, without an uncomfortable crunch.

Flexi-Rod Set

We decided to go with a flexi-rod set and she applied over 40 in my head to ensure I had defined curls. The entire process to roll each curl took less than an hour; Each section had to be detangled, moisturized, and finished with the forming pomade. After that it was time for me to sit under the dryer and let the style set.

She separated some of the curls and broke them up just enough to give the desired look of a defined afro. I was ecstatic with the outcome because I’d never had such small and defined curls in my life.

Essential Oils

After my curls were unraveled and separated, Kimistry added a pinch of peppermint essential oil from her personal line. In recent years she’s started incorporating essential oils into her natural living routine for hair and body. This is one of the reasons that drew me into the salon. After I left the salon the curls lasted for about a week. I wore them down for four days and in a curly up-do for the next few days.

Natural Hair Tips

Moisture is key to a successful hairstyle. Throughout the flexi-rod set, Kim continuously added water and moisturizing agents to the hair that had been sitting. My type 4c hair craves moisture and absorbs it quickly and I’ve often underestimated how much water and product I should use. A look you think you might not be able to accomplish, might just take some extra steps and TLC.

“It’s not about setting standards for your hair based on someone else’s” was one of the biggest takeaways from my salon experience. It’s about finding a stylist that knows how to work with your hair type and do styles that will amplify your hair’s beauty. What might work for one youtuber, might not always work for you and that’s okay.
