Stepping into the Indie Beauty Expo always feels like entering a secret, enchanted purple forest for beauty ingénues to wander.
I discovered Indie Beauty Expo last year in New York, when our company Kimberly Elise Naturals showcased Alchemy 27. At the event, Kimberly also spoke about her experiences discovering authentic beauty in Hollywood. While that was an amazing experience, this year it was nice to attend IBE as a green beauty consumer.
I’ve been more intentional with my beauty purchases. Rather than picking out products because they are trendy or because the packaging is pretty, I search for products that support my greater goals — like traveling. I like to think of green beauty, as “conscience” from the inside out.
Here are 3 products I love from IBE Los Angeles 2017.
3-step Brightening+ Charcoal Mask For Travel….
I hope to do some traveling this year and will need to find sensitive, acne-friendly products that go well in suitcases and airplanes. The 3-step Brightening+ Charcoal Mask ($7.50) by Skinesque caught my eye because of its travel-friendly packaging, clean ingredients, and innovation.
Key ingredients include birch tree sap, which is packed with Vitamin C and works to hydrate dull skin. Of course, charcoal is great for acne and exfoliation. I’m saving this one for the next time I travel.
Smoothie Beauty’s Awaken Skincare Mask For Nourishment….
Smoothie Beauty is seriously my new winter skincare must-have. The masks come in packages that you keep in the refrigerator, so the ingredients are still raw and pure.
I tried Awaken Skincare Mask ($30.00+), which is made from raw cacao powder, almond milk, dark maple syrup, coffee granules, and cold-pressed unrefined extra virgin coconut oil. I promise you, this mask goes perfectly with coffee and a morning newspaper. Mmmm.
I used it this morning, and I gotta tell ya, the skin on my face really does feel refreshed and awakened. (By the way, I used a honey mask from Laurel Whole Plant Organics last night to treat an unexpected breakout.)
Honua Skincare For #SurfingGoals….
Aloha Youth Serum ($58.00) by Honua Skincare absorbs perfectly well into my cleansed face, and I really do feel like my skin is saying “ahhhh.” After 30-seconds, there is no oil residue and my face looks brighter. Their cruelty-free skincare uses Hawaiian healing botanicals, such as the Naupaka- a half blossom featured in the photo gallery above.
I tried a bunch of different serums last year, which is tough because I have oily skin. I think I found a good one at IBE. Seriously.
The woman at the counter had stunning skin, clear skin — the ingredients must work. Continuing my surfing lessons are on my to-do list this year – perhaps a trip to Hawaii too? I’m excited to explore that with this skincare line!

IBE is not complete without provocative some discussions about the Independent Beauty industry and marketplace. I listened to Brandie Gilliam of Thoughtfully Mag in the Beauty Trends Pane, which featured The Green Beauty Rules author Paige Padgett (who we can’t get enough of). The panel also featured Romain Gaillard, founder of The Detox Market; Tara Sowalty and Jessie De Lowe, co-founders of How You Glow; and creator of the Black Mirror Project Deddeh Howard.
What were some interesting trends they mentioned? Probiotic skincare, for sure. Minimalist beauty. Bright pigments. But Deddeh mentioned my favorite trend. Rather than focusing on what’s trending in the magazines, green beauty challenges you to ask, “How do my cosmetics make me feel?“
Now that’s beauty from the inside-out.
