Throughout my life, summer has been marked by romantic road trips, lazy poolside days with my daughters playing in the water, beach getaways, Minnesota lake sports, and of course, lots of sun.
During this time, I learned how critically important it is to take care of your body and skin. Here are my three summer skincare and haircare tips to protect yourself against the damaging effects of the sun.
1. To Protect Your Skin This Summer, Use Sunscreen
Stock up and keep sun protection in convenient places so you don’t forget to apply. Be aware. Many people don’t know traditional sunscreens contain chemicals and oils that are dangerous to our marine life (think slathering up at the beach then going for a dip.) It’s important to look for sunscreen that is not only effective in protecting our skin, but also doesn’t endanger water life. Biodegradable sunscreens are best. Some of my favorite skin care products to protect against the sun are Soleo Organics Sunscreen and Caribbean Solutions Solguard SPF 15 Natural Skin Care.

These aren’t always easy to find in stores, so your best bet is to buy ahead of time online. One of my favorite summer skin care products is Aveeno’s Active Naturals Natural Protection SPF 50 Lotion. Brimming with naturally-sourced ingredients that are suitable for normal and sensitive skin types, this nourishing lotion is a summer must-have.
2. Wear A Hat To Protect Your Skin!
Not only will a hat shield your face against UV rays, but you can also look incredibly stylish doing so, especially with a big beautiful floppy hat. You’ll be surprised by how cool a hat will keep you in the poolside sun, all while looking stylish and very in season.
For my fellow naturals who can’t find a hat to fit over their kinks and curls, my absolute favorite summer accessory is a parasol. Cute, original, and functional.
3. Protect Your Lips
Pack an all natural lip balm that contains nourishing and natural ingredients. It will not only protect your pretty puckers against the blazing heat, but it will also hydrate your lips and safeguard them from the drying effects of the sun.
