Meet Naomi Djese, a Manchester-based blogger with a passion for plant-based diets and living a healthy lifestyle.
Like many others, Naomi wasn’t always a vegan. Read on to find out more about why Naomi changed her diet and how it improved her life.
Why did you decide to go vegan?
I was diagnosed with aHUS (Atypical Haemolytic-Uremic Syndrome), which is a rare condition which affected my kidneys. There were no symptoms, which is why I was never diagnosed with it until the age of 19. However, mine was triggered by having a common cold that later became serious.
How did you know that a plant-based diet would relieve your condition?
I didn’t expect it to relieve the condition, but it did. I just became very tired of all the medication and treatments for the condition. That’s when I started researching plant-based diets and saw many testimonies about how it changed people’s lives.
I was on multiple medications and treatments, which completely ceased a few weeks into my diet change. I rarely fall ill now, including flu and the common cold, which I used to experience several times per year.
What did you think about veganism before?
Like most people, I never ever even considered veganism. I thought it was extreme, but that was because I didn’t know much about it. I feel like society heavily misinforms or projects a carnivorous diet on us and makes it seem “normal” and more appealing than the latter. The majority of us take this information without question and accept it as fact.
What was your diet like before?
I was on a balanced diet before and would always eat my vegetables, but meat, poultry, or fish would always accompany it. I also loved fast food, so I would have that once in a while.
How is veganism accepted where you live?
What is your favorite vegan food?
I love Ratatouille and vegan pancakes. You can never go wrong with them.

What has changed in your life now that you’ve changed your diet?
I feel stronger. I have more energy, less anxiety, and increased mental focus. I have definitely learned a lot since the change and I also enjoy yoga.

Yoga is about health and cultivating self-love… and diet is a pivotal part of this belief. To be proficient in yoga, the body, mind, and soul must be in good health, which is nothing a plant-based diet can’t help you achieve!
I feel able to push myself further than I could before and achieve more than I could before. I definitely feel a lot less tension in my body and I’m a lot more relaxed, which any yoga practitioners will tell you are beneficial to the practice.

What food do you recommend others to try, if they are new to veganism?
I would recommend something that tastes similar to what they are used to eating, that way, it won’t be hard for them. I have listed some vegan recipes at the bottom, that even non-vegans tend to love.

Any words of wisdom for those who want to adopt the vegan lifestyle?
Love yourself enough to eat to live and not to die.
For me, a plant-based diet has been more than worth it, especially since I haven’t been back in hospital!
