How To Style Buns For Every Hair Type | Natural Hairstyle Guide

When you want your hair pulled back and away from your face, and also want to appear elegant, groomed, and trendy, a classic hair bun is a wonderful, foundational natural hairstyle.

Kimberly-elise-naturalsBuns can be accessorized with cute headbands, clips, and hats, as well as unique pieces and twists for a personalized look. Buns are a wonderful protective style, meaning they protect your fragile hair strands from environmental damage, particularly when you are using the appropriate tools and styling correctly.

Just as there are a variety of hair buns, there are also many techniques to address the concerns of all hair types.

For example, women (and men!) with fine hair types might have a hard time making the hair appear thick enough to make their bun look full, or keeping the bun in place. Black hair types might have a challenge with hair shrinkage, that is, coiled hair’s tendency to appear shorter than it really is!

This guide introduces the tools and techniques you will need to create the perfect, groomed bun, regardless of your hair concern.

Classic Bun For Natural, Fine Hair Types

summer-hair-sock-bunTime: 5-10 minutes

Level of Difficulty: Easy

You Will Need

  • 2 gentle, no-slip hair elastics
  • A gentle hair brush, with dense but soft bristles
  • Hair pins
  • Bobby pins, if you have shorter hair
  • Your favorite hair spray
  • Conair Hair Bun Maker
  • Kimberly Elise Naturals Alchemy 27

Step 1: Prepare & Protect

  1. Apply 3 drops of Kimberly Elise Alchemy 27 hair elixir to your palms and scrunch into your hair. Comb through evenly distribute and to remove knots and tangles.

Step 2: Style

  1. Gather all of your hair and put it into a ponytail. A messy bun can be very cute, so don’t try to make it too perfect.
  2. For volume, brush up your bun, making it sit very high on your head. Using the elastic, pull into a standard ponytail. It will feel high and silly, but that’s okay. Tease out your ponytail with hairspray for more volume.
  3. Take out your bun maker, push your hair through, and turn it through so that the hair covers the bun maker.

Step 3: Secure & Accessorize

  1. Using your hair pins, pin underneath the bun, including at the back of the bun.
  2. Using the second elastic, snap your bun into place, over the bun maker.
  3. Use bobby pins to catch any fly-aways, particularly the hair at the nape of your neck.

I love buns for natural hair for their classy chic style. Also, they are my go-to style for work during the summer because they keep me cool and protect my strands from the sun.
