Who is the first person that comes to mind when you think of female rappers? Is it Nicki Minaj? Or maybe Iggy Azalea?
When I think of female rappers, I automatically think of Queen Latifah, the female pioneer who took hip-hop by storm when she was just nineteen years old.

Born Dana Owens, Latifah is more commonly known by her stage name, which is derived from the Arabic word طيفة laţīfa. The word means “delicate” and “very kind.” From her philanthropy to feminism, it is clear that Owens has lived up to her stage name. She is a force to be reckoned with, and continues to pave the way for women in entertainment.
For millennials, Queen Latifah is a rapper second to being an actress first. She is the star of movies like Girls Trip, Ice Age, and Set It Off – the latter of which she starred in with our very own Kimberly Elise!
She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in 2002’s Best Picture winner Chicago. In 2015, she was nominated for playing “Bessie Smith” in the HBO film Bessie, a film that also earned her an Emmy for producing.
Queen Latifah is one heck of a woman, and I cannot wait to see what she does next.
